A social and political activist who became a spokeswoman for the women’s liberation movement in North America in the 1960s and 1970s, Gloria Steinem has had a life-long career promoting feminist and civil-rights issues. She has done this through her journalism and other writings, her willingness to take part in political campaigns, and her support for organisations working for women’s rights and welfare. In her later years, she has also taken up the cause of animal rights.
